Are you a sexual pervert? That's because your parents spanked you while you were a child. These are the results of four studies and a meta-analysis presented at the American Psychological Association's Summit on Violence and Abuse in Relationships. Obama's rapid response
Certainly, this is upsetting, but we have to learn to ignore internet-based smear ads, given that it is impossible (or will be) to determine their origin. If we can't shut down spammers, why on Earth would we expect to be able pin this on someone, let alone someone as powerful as Clinton? For all we know, this could be done by an Obama staffer to demonize Clinton, a sly McCain supporter, etc. Public discourse should only be on confirmable events - if we see paid advertisements displaying this sort of image, by all means, call it out as the dirty politics that it is! .
Disruptions force up coal and iron
FINANCIAL markets may be sweating on a US recession, but prices for Australia's bulk mineral exports, coal and iron ore, are soaring as a spate of supply disruptions reveals just how tight markets are. Floods in Queensland and power cuts to mines in South Africa have reduced supplies from key coal exporters, while China is cutting coal exports to manage production for its own soaring power demand. There were reports last week that ships seeking to load coal had been turned back from China's largest port, Qinhuangdao, after heavy snow and rain sent power consumption soaring and hampered coal transport. In South Africa, power cuts to industry could last up to four weeks, as utility Eskom battles soaring demand and tight coal supplies as it is forced to compete with strong export markets for local coal.

In fact, Offredo fell in love with Australia as soon as he landed in Adelaide. He went to the university and decided that he'll be back here after the cycling season in the capacity of a student between his two seasons as a professional cyclist. TELEVISION: The shows must go on
America's love for nonscripted programming will be put to the test in the coming weeks — along with their ability to tell the truth, remember the eighth grade and knock a gladiator off a podium with a foam-padded stick.Although the Writers Guild of America's strike may end at four months if published rumors hold true, networks that long ago exhausted most of their original programming still need reality shows — which are not covered under the guild — to give viewers something new during the February sweeps and beyond; even if the strike were to end this week, it would take a couple months for new, scripted shows to get through the creative process.Following is a roundup compiled from network releases and other sources of what new series, specials and other stop-gaps the networks have planned for the next few months.
That Painter From Juno
McPherson is creating some distance from her punk-rock roots even as she brings her cool-kid, comic-book edge to the gallery scene. Mr. LeVine, the gallerist, has been tracking Ms. McPherson's progress since she graduated from college. Artists with a rogue, street-art aesthetic like Ms. McPherson, he thinks, are breaking new ground between commercial illustration and fine art. Walking the path worn by artists like Art Spiegelman and even the Sotheby's street-art favorite Banksy, Ms. McPherson is one of the subculture-inspired punks currently making inroads to the still-stuffy art world. “I grew up on TV, skateboarding, punk rock, tattoo, all this stuff that just gets incorporated into this kind of art," Mr. LeVine explained. Growing up in Trenton, N.J., in the 80's, he was a punk kid who collected comic books, record jackets and posters.
Death becomes them
But as I sit in the gravedigger's office sipping mint tea, I start to relax a little. Still, the smell of the damp and the idea that we are surrounded by the dead, left, right and center, sends a chill up my spine every now and then. It is Cairo's oldest and largest cemetery, a place where hundreds of thousands of dead Egyptians lie peacefully. This is it — the final destination. Or rather, a transit station where people wait for the big day, the Day of Judgement. But to Hajj Abdel-Aziz, this place also represents his livelihood. At 76, Saleh has seen his share of death. Born, bred and living in the Imam section of the City of the Dead, Hajj Abdel-Aziz's job is to build graves, care for them and open them when a new family member dies. .
For immediate release:
In February 2008, Prime Minister Sundaravej publicly stated that "When the crackdown [on drugs] is underway, killings will take place ? extrajudicial killings do occur." This statement not only recalls the Thaksin government's 'license to kill'-style of drugs enforcement, when black lists and monthly targets were used as official policies for cutting the number of drug dealers, it is also an indication that the Prime Minister is preparing Thai citizens for a new wave of unlawful killings. It appears a cynical attempt to preempt both domestic and international criticism. It also represents a disturbing acceptance of unlawful behavior and excessive use of force by state authorities and a lack of political will to prevent further illegal killings. "The Prime Minister is now preparing another war on drugs, adding insult to injury to a situation in which crimes against humanity may have occurred," stated Baber.
Super Bowl Eve Open Thread
So many rules are different, making the game different. You measure a quarterback on his whole set of skills, intelligence, and toughness, but the rule changes make different skills more important in different eras. To be blunt, these guys aren't playing the same game. If you breathe on a receiver these days, you get a penalty. On the other hand, linemen can use their hands. Those rules change the game. For example, in Johnny Unitas' era, defensive linemen could use the head slap, and could hammer a quarterback mercilessly. QBs back then had to be physically tougher. Could Brady have stood up under the same pounding? Who knows? Johnny U had to call his own plays. But with all the adjustments Brady has to call out at the line of scrimmage, is it really that much different? Who knows? There were really fast players in Unitas' era (e.g., Bob Hayes) who were as fast as anyone today, but on the other hand, there's no doubt that today's overall team speed is much faster today. That extra speed means that defenses can cover much more of the field.
Yuks are scarce once trailers end
Steve Zahn had a good 2007 — he came this close to an Oscar nomination for Rescue Dawn — but the new year finds him working as a second-tier Owen Wilson. His character, Pete, the son of a late, beloved wildlife-show host, is running dad's program into cancellation with the mismanagement of soundman-partner Fred (Allen Covert) and crew members Cooker (Jonah Hill) and Danny (Peter Dante). The problem is that they don't know the first thing about animals and they're too stoned to find out. A tip to the whereabouts of Bigfoot sends them to Ecuador (played by what appears to be locations in greater Los Angeles) along with a perky travel agent (Ashley Scott), a burned-out cameraman (Justin Long), and an alcoholic animal handler (Kevin Heffernan). The movie's an almost painless frat boys' night out, and the target audience will recognize the cast from other, better dude-comedies.
