In fact, some of the most interesting talk was about the questions that were all too hypothetical a few years ago at many institutions. Instead of just talking about why writing programs need to be thought of as their own entity, the discussion is on how the writing and rhetoric curriculum should evolve and what a degree in writing should mean. One issue facing many of the young writing programs is that they have multiple missions. Dan Royer, chair of writing at Grand Valley State University, said his program was created five years ago — stepping out from a large English department, where "too many competing identities" made it difficult for writing to get sufficient attention. "Students want a community to be part of, as writers," he said. The numbers suggest that the program’s independence is creating that community.
Syria Killed Imad Mughniyah!
Imad Mughniyah, a senior but shadowy Hezbollah commander accused by the United States and Israel of masterminding suicide bombings, hijackings and hostage-takings that spanned 25 years, was killed by a car bomb in the Syrian capital of Damascus, the Shiite Muslim group and other officials said Wednesday. Hezbollah accused Israel of carrying out the attack on Mughniyah, a charge that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's office denied. A USA State Department spokesman welcomed the news of Mughniyah's death, but said he did not know who was responsible for it. Who is Imad Mughniyah and what kind of murders did he commit. Below are some of these notorious crimes: *April 1983: suicide bomber rams van packed with explosives into the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, killing 63 people, including 17 Americans.

Period,'' Schwarzenegger insisted, launching into a two-minute monologue on why it is critical to plan ahead for California's future into the next century. As for himself, Schwarzenegger insisted such planning would spoil the fun. "The uncertainty and not having a safety net was always my thing that drove me. I didn't want a safety net,'' Schwarzenegger told a small group of California reporters. It is the reason he refused to consider a TV series -- "it would have been too predictable,'' Schwarzenegger said of his acting days. "I wanted to finish the movie, then find and struggle for the next thing. Find a script. Find a director.'' "If I do a great job here with this job, if I can do the things that I want to do for California, I mean, there is a million things that will be available in 2010.
Doug Clark getting patted down????
OK, first let me iterate that I am NOT blaming you guys for this, but I found it quite humorous and indicative of Spokane following the lead story on the website today. Here's the basic timeline of the story updates: Spokane bank robbed. Spokane SWAT team has cornered two suspects in house (one believed to be armed). Spokane SWAT team has cornered THREE suspects in house (one believed to be armed). And finally... Spokane SWAT finds no one. Ah, yes....Spokane's finest. .
American Axle strike becomes personal to workers
It was a good work atmosphere, and it made me feel like part of the family." But now Monterosso said he feels betrayed. He's one of 3,600 American Axle workers on strike since Tuesday morning in a labor dispute that has become particularly personal for workers at American Axle, running deeper than their fight against demands for steep wage and benefit cuts. Over the years, many workers say they've gotten to know Dauch. They've seen him on the plant floor, shaken his hand and noticed when he knew their names. Dauch, a veteran of Chrysler Corp. and Volkswagen of America, has led the company since buying five General Motors parts plants with a group of investors in 1994. Since then, workers have ridden the rollercoaster with Dauch, from the highs of the SUV and pickup boom to the lows of recent years as sales slow for those products.

Randy Bowser composes music for the production of "Dorian -- The ...
He is a member of the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Question: You worked in Los Angeles? Answer: I kept very busy in Los Angeles, unlike the conscious image, there is plenty of theater. I had a featured role on "CHiPS." It's been long enough now that I will just admit that it's the only episode I've ever seen. It was great fun. And little walk-on things in shows that came and went, independent films. I kept busy. Q: Why did you move to Salem? A: There's always more to the story. A major relationship ended, and that was rather traumatizing. I was having difficulty finding motivation to do anything. And finding out that mom (who lived in Salem) needed so much; she wasn't doing well. It seemed like a good time to move here.

Worry mounts for father of missing student
For nearly a week, Brian Warren has had no contact with his son, Daniel Querzoli, a Bridgewater State College student missing since Valentine's Day. Warren says he's had little sleep since then. "I really don't know. I've run so many scenarios through my head that my brain's tired," said Warren, 40, on Tuesday night. His son, Daniel Querzoli, 22, of Bridgewater, and his son's girlfriend, Amy Scott, 21, of New Jersey, have been missing since late Thursday night. The case remains an active investigation and authorities are not ruling out foul play, Providence police Detective Sgt. Carl Weston said Tuesday. "At this point, we don't have any evidence that points that way, but we're not completely discounting it," Weston said.
Christina Ricci's Aussie romance confirmed
HOLLYWOOD A-lister Christina Ricci has jetted into Oz for a romantic summer holiday with her Aussie boyfriend Kick Gurry. The little-known star of Looking for Alibrandi, Gurry has upgraded from single status to dating big screen darling Ricci - with their Down Under visit to Sydney and Melbourne confirming months of speculation about a possible romance. The pair met in September while starring in the Hollywood blockbuster Speedracer, a live-action remake of the 1960s Japanese cartoon, which also stars Matthew Fox, Susan Sarandon and John Goodman. Gurry, who relocated to Los Angeles a year ago, and Golden Globe nominee Ricci were thought to have revved into a romance after their relationship sped from the set of the film into real life. However, while a number of cosy sightings of the pair set Tinseltown tongues a-wagging, agents for both Ricci and Gurry have declined to comment on or confirm the romance.
School results - Daugherty wins UPDATED
When we called the race earlier, the only official results available for the runoff were for early and absentee voting, which Daugherty carried 113-107. But workers for both candidates -- gathering votes by checking posted totals at individual precincts -- were coming up with similar tallies giving Daugherty the victory. This turnout was an increase of more than 50 percent over the first election, which Daugherty led 808-806. Two other candidates picked up 193 more votes in the first election. (The Pulaski County Election Commission had problems with its Internet provider, which hampered reporting of vote totals Tuesday night.) I drove around to a few polls myself to gather some early votes. I checked the biggest individual poll for Daugherty and Swaim in the first election and a large box with a split vote.
