The Most Foolish

For those of us expecting a stimulus check, it's hard to voice an opinion against such government benevolence. But before you get too comfortable with how economically "stimulating" this program will be, you might want to take a closer look at some ramifications of this plan that proposes happier times ahead.

The music stopped, but the dancing continuesIt isn't breaking news that the economy is in trouble. To what degree this is the case is a matter of debate, but it's pretty clear that the "Goldilocks" economy days have left the building. That said, something does, indeed, need to be done to ensure, at the very least, that we don't get ourselves into an even bigger mess than the one we're already in. But is shipping out checks really the answer?

The reason we're in this mess has nothing to do with consumers not spending enough money.

Science Tough Roads Loom Ahead for U.S. Pharmaceutical Giants

Traditionally, one of the largest and most profitable industries in America has been pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical companies are interesting in that they make products that no one wants, but hundreds of thousands of people must have to survive.

The pharmaceutical industry as we know it is due for some big changes. Last month, DailyTech reported that former Intel CEO Andrew S. Grove ripped the pharmaceutical industry for its underperforming research operations. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that high profile medications coming off patent between now and 2012 will result in a loss of about $67 billion USD in income for top U.S. pharmaceutical companies. That amount is about half what the pharmaceutical industry made in combined sales during 2007.

Few will feel sorry for the declining sales of these pharmaceutical giants since many Americans are literally forced to decide between food and their life saving medications each month.

Pink iPod nano debuts for spring, Valentine's, pink lovers

I have a tale to tell my friends (that's you guys) here at Infinite Loop. I received a text message from a friend of mine who works at a retail outlet last night (not an Apple Store), asking me if there was a new Apple announcement yesterday. I wrote back and said "no, why?" He proceeded to tell me that his store just got a shipment of pink iPod nanos. I went to the iPod nano page on Apple's site to check out the color lineup and saw the reddish/magenta color, and assumed that's what he was referring to. I moved on with my life.

This morning, Apple announced a new, truly pink iPod nano. D'oh! Good job losing that scoop, Jacqui. Happy Birthday to me.

Moving along, the "gorgeous" pink iPod nano, as Apple refers to it, is available immediately in 8GB for $199.

Weston hike explores human activity

The New Canaan Nature Center has scheduled a hike in Devil's Den in Weston for Saturday, March 8. Participants will search for signs of human activity dating back thousands of years. Volunteer guide Al Noe of Weston will lead hikers through the natural beauty of The Den to see evidence of the semi-nomadic Native Americans who once called the area home. The hike features a 3.3-mile hike that includes a vista from Deer Knoll, examination of the mechanical remains of a portable sawmill, a Native American shelter site, Godfrey Pond and the ruins of a water powered sawmill, and a charcoal-making site. Depending on the amount of interest at each site, this moderate hike should be completed in two to two-and-a-half hours. Mr. Noe has been leading hikes for adults and school groups at Devil's Den for more than six years.

FLAVOR OF THE WEEK: THE DATE FROM HELL, NEW JERSEY

For KATELYN NUDO, every picture tells a story. Unfortunately, most of them aren't true. By Katelyn Nudo I swore I would never join one of those online dating services. When I did, it was on my mother’s suggestion. I guess she could see from my list of drug dealers, egotistical Italians and Spanish lovers that I needed some help. I don’t know why I ever went against my initial thought of dot-com dating, because when I met Kevin, I knew I was in trouble. When eharmony.com produced a total of zero matches for my personality, I tried Plentyoffish.com. It was free, and it was on the computer monitor in my college library when I sat down. A sign perhaps. I signed up with a false email address and browsed promising boyfriends, one-night stands and future husbands. I must admit, I was surprised at how many good-looking men were desperate in the tri-state area.

Clerics of Iran's revolution being pushed from power

Clerics of Iran's revolution being pushed from power Many are barred from running for parliament Thomas Erdbrink / Washington Post

TEHRAN, Iran -- After Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's followers toppled a U.S.-backed autocracy in Iran, he brought to power a coterie of politically engaged clerics who sought to create the world's first Islamic republic.

Nearly 30 years later, a new generation of politicians is sweeping aside those clerics, many of whom had become proponents of better relations with the West and gradual steps toward greater democracy.

The newcomers are former military commanders, filmmakers and mayors, many younger than 50 and only a few of them clerics. They are vowing to carry out the promises of the revolution and to place Iran among the world's leading nations.

Updating some Raiders news...

Again, there are rumors that wide receiver Randy Moss and the Green Bay Packers are in talks regarding a trade for former Cal quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Once again, it's not true. We're being told by both sides that they have not talked, which means they haven't discussed a trade about Moss.

Tight end Daniel Graham, probably the top player at his position in free agency, met with Raiders owner Al Davis, coach Lane Kiffin and team officials today and then flew to Seattle to meet with the Seahawks on Monday. The Vikings also reportedly have interest in Graham.

Graham, 28, won two Super Bowl rings with the New England Patriots and established himself as an outstanding blocker. But he also wants to catch the ball, and the Raiders would give him that opportunity.
